William G. (Bill) Staton
MBA, CFA, America’s Money Coach®
Bill Staton is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) with an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill. Bill is also known as “America’s Money Coach®.”
Bill has been Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer for Staton Financial Advisors, LLC since its inception in 2000. He and his wife/partner Mary began portfolio management in 1997.
He launched his financial services career at Interstate Securities (headquartered in Charlotte, NC) as a securities analyst in 1971. While at Interstate, he became director of the equity research department and member of the management team and board of directors. Bill left Interstate in late 1985 to begin a stock-picking newsletter, which he published until March 2011.
An economic historian with 43 years in the financial-services industry, Bill has been profiled or quoted in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, New York Times, Barron’s, Business Week, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Bottom Line Personal, Money magazine, and interviewed on numerous radio and television shows.
He is the author of six books on investing, including his most recent, Double Your Money in America’s Finest Companies®: The Unbeatable Moneymaking Power of Rising Dividends from John Wiley & Sons. He co-authored How to Become Financially Free on $50 a Month from Nightingale-Conant (2014); Worry-Free Family Finances (McGraw-Hill); and The $50 a Month Millionaire with his wife Mary.
Bill and Mary live in Charlotte and have four children and two grandsons. He loves to travel to remote places like the Amazon in Suriname and Peru, pursue nature photography in Botswana and Antarctica, and walk their dog daily. Bill tries to play tennis at least three times per week and meditate 20 minutes twice daily. And usually does.
Mary Tunstall Staton
Mary T. Staton is CEO and Chief Compliance Officer of Staton Financial Advisors, LLC, a portfolio management company headquartered in Charlotte, NC. She and husband Bill co-authored How to Become Financially Free on $50 a Month from Nightingale-Conant (2014), The $50 A Month Millionaire (2012) and Worry-Free Family Finances (McGraw-Hill) in 2004. Mary has published several personal finance newsletters and been quoted in such publications as the Christian Science Monitor, Bottom Line Personal, Skirt and SouthPark magazines, the Charlotte Observer, Greater Charlotte Biz, and was interviewed on such stations as WFAE-FM and WJZY-TV.
Mary is currently president of the Symphony Guild of Charlotte and is on the board of directors of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. She is an immediate past president of the Charlotte-South Rotary Club, and was honored as their Distinguished Rotarian in 2013. Mary has held leadership positions in many arts and human-service organizations in the Charlotte region.
Mary holds an MBA from the McColl School of Business at Queens University in Charlotte and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Florida. She is a graduate of Leadership Charlotte, Class IX. She and Bill have four children and two grandsons.
Mary loves to travel (and has been to all seven continents), garden, hike, read, and entertain family and friends. Her favorite quote, from a poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, is “Earth’s crammed with heaven.” Her motto is “Do good and have fun!”
